The Ladder That Leads to Heaven
Genesis 28:10-17
Jacob’s Dream
10Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Thought:
Jacob has a most surreal dream on his way to his mother’s family, where God promises to him the same promises he gave to both Abraham and Isaac. But there is this imagery of a ladder with angels ascending and descending. He wakes up to acknowledge the holiness of the place he resides in and refers to as the house of God and gate of heaven. A place where heaven and earth seem to meet.
Now it is a very exquisite dream with a NT connection, as Jesus is gathering the first of his disciples, Phillip brings Nathanael to Jesus and Jesus shows him that he is the son of God. But then he says this…
51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

What does this mean? It connects Jesus with Jacob’s dream, better yet he is the ladder that connects heaven to earth and Jacob described it also as a gate. Jesus described a gate which leads to heaven, that is narrow and hard to find. (Matt 7:14)
He is that gate, Jesus has come as the one to reconcile heaven with earth, where the kingdom of God will be on earth, and his people will be with him once again. Jesus is the only way that we can come to father, be in relationship with him. More importantly just as God ensured Jacob that he would receive the promise. So also Jesus becomes the assurance that will receive all of God’s promises.
As it says in 2 Cor 1:20. “All the promises of God find their Yes in him [Jesus].” We know the promises of God are ours, because they have been given to us through faith in Jesus, and so the answer is always yes. He is the certainty of God’s faithfulness, every time we doubt God, we simply look at Jesus, his death upon the cross, his resurrection, how that secures us and reminds us that we are his children.
God has given you his son, surely he shall graciously give you all things. (Rom 8:32 Just keep trusting in Jesus.
Reflection:
Jacob’s dream reminds us that God has provided only one way for us to know Him—Jesus, the true ladder between heaven and earth. When doubts arise or God’s promises feel distant, we look to Christ, whose cross and resurrection guarantee every promise God has made. This passage calls us to rest in Him as our assurance, trusting that in Jesus the answer to every promise is always “Yes.”
Prayer:
Father, thank You for giving Jesus as the true gate of heaven and the assurance of all Your promises. When I doubt Your faithfulness, turn my eyes to Christ—His cross, His resurrection, His unfailing love. Teach me to trust Him as the only way to You and to rest in the certainty He provides. Keep my faith anchored in Your Son, who is the “Yes” to every promise. Amen.
