The God Who Meets Us at the Well

Genesis 29:1-3

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

1Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east. 2As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well’s mouth was large, 3and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well.

Thought:
There is a small but ever prominent detail in the stories of Genesis, there is a lot of talk about wells. Funnily enough, this is likely the same well where Abraham’s servant met Rebekah, now Jacob is there about to meet his cousin, who in time to come will become his wife.

Wells were incredibly important in Old Testament times of course, because without water livestock and people died. Water as it is still to this day, is essential to life, and it isn’t often all that bountiful in the middle east, where much of the story of the Bible happens. But these wells don’t simply provide physical life, they also show God’s continual provision in keeping his promises.

Jacob has fled with little of anything, but now he finds life at this well, not just physical sustenance, but provision as he finds refuge in the house of his uncle. And his uncle’s house will serve as the main instrument through which God will prosper Jacob and his family.

Don’t think that God has left you behind, that you can’t make it through this season or circumstance because just when you feel as though you are at the end of yourself God will provide something to sustain and it will be exactly what you need.

God has been providing wells to sustain his people for thousands of years, he has always provided for, always sustained them in every season, even as they rebelled against him. Don’t think that he won’t do it for you now. He has promised it and he is faithful.

Reflection:
We all walk through dry seasons where strength feels gone and God seems distant. Jacob’s well reminds us that God provides exactly what we need, exactly when we need it. He has always sustained His people, and He will sustain you. Jesus is your true well—the fountain of life who meets you in weariness and restores your soul. Trust that God has not left you; He will provide again.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the wells of grace You provide in every season. When I feel dry, weary, or far from You, lead me again to the living water found in Christ. Help me trust that You will sustain me just as You sustained Jacob. Keep my hope anchored in Your faithfulness, knowing You always give exactly what Your children need. Amen.
