The Difference Between False Peace and True Peace
Genesis 44:17
17But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.”
(ESV)
Thought:
Here is offered to Judah and his brothers a way of escape. Leave your brother behind and go to your father in peace. But what kind of peace would it be, their youngest brother enslaved, their father living his last days in despair and sorrow. The family would have been a shell of what it used to be, let alone they may still starve to death due to the famine.
But you see always this peace is on offer to us. A half-baked peace. You see this was always the great sin of the false prophets.
Jeremiah 23:16–17
16Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17They say continually to those who despise the word of the LORD, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”
(ESV)
They would prophesy of good things only to appease those to whom they prophesied. They offered a fake peace, it was what people wanted to hear, but it wasn’t the truth and would often end in calamity. All day long the world is saying “God doesn’t care about what we do”, “The only happiness you can have is here and now”, “You’re actually a pretty good person”. All of these are lies, conjured up to sell you an illusion of truth.
How do we then find true peace?
Romans 5:1
1Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
(ESV)
It is found through faith in Jesus, that his sacrifice, taking our place on that cross has purchased for us peace with God, there is no other way and there never will be.
Reflection:
As I go about my day, I need to be careful not to settle for a false sense of peace. It can be tempting to believe comforting lies or avoid difficult truths if they make life feel easier in the moment. Today I need to apply this by measuring my thoughts and decisions against God's Word rather than my feelings. Real peace is not found in ignoring reality but in trusting Jesus, who has made peace between God and me through His sacrifice.
Prayer:
Father, protect me from believing the false promises of this world. Help me distinguish between temporary comfort and genuine peace. Teach me to trust in Christ alone, knowing that through Him I have peace with You. Keep my heart anchored in Your truth, even when lies appear more appealing. Amen.
