Devotional 10

The blame game

Read Genesis 3:7-13

Ever heard of the blame game? The process were by people assign the blame to everyone but themselves. It is silly and often childish and yet it is something all of us do.

But don’t worry we’ve been doing it since the beginning. Adam blames Eve, Eve blames the serpent, they both disobeyed but it wasn’t really their fault. Satan basically made them do it. You see within this blame game hides a massive problem, a problem that would plague us all for generations to come, that would keep us from accepting the gospel, and also be the reason it appears so offensive.

To accept the gospel one must reach this conclusion…I am the problem. The reason for my troubles, my problems, my lack of relationship with God is…me. If we continue to shift the blame to not fundamentally see that we are the problem that must be dealt with, we will never truly experience the blessing of the gospel.

Sin brings shame, we want to cover it up, hide it, we will find any way to get rid of the shame. Putting it off on someone else, blaming them, anything to minimise that feeling. But by never taking ownership but refusing to accept that our sin is ours and that we are the ones that must deal with it and deserve the punishment it incurs. We will never find ourselves taking it to God.

We must take it to God, in order to receive forgiveness for it. But that will never happen as long as we try to trick ourselves into thinking it is not our problem. We make our lives harder simply to hide things from the one who sees all things.

It is stupidity and yet we all do it, and God continues to show grace to us despite it. Do not hold back from God the worst parts of you, don’t think you can hide them from him. He knows you better than you know yourself. You are so sinful he can’t stand the site of you, but in Christ the sins are taken away and he smiles at you once again.

There is freedom and blessing in accepting the blame. Do not shy away from it.

Questions:

Are there areas in your life where you may be refusing to accept that you are part of the problem?

What can you remind yourself about God, that would more readily lead you to bring all the worst parts of you before God?
