God Remains Sovereign

Read Genesis 11:1-9

Here we again see almost the same storyline as before the flood. God gives man the earth, man sins, long genealogy and story showing the depths of human wickedness.

Though there are some differences. Before the flood the epitome of sin was seen in a world characterised by violence and selfishness. Now in the plain of Shinar we see not violence and selfishness, but unity and cooperation. They had found a common goal, in defying God’s command and seeking to immortalise their names, make themselves famous by building an incredibly tall tower.

Sinners love to think about themselves first which leads to violence and division, but there is something that can bring unity, something they share in come. A hatred for God and a love of praising themselves, and so they link arms in this pursuit.

Though evil brings division, it can also join together in unity, not forever but for a time to further propel their own selfish goals. We see it today as it appears that the evil of the world is accumulating and banding together to fight against God and the spread of his good news. To direct and govern the world in their way, not in obedience to God’s commands.

We can be given into fear, as we watch the evils of this world continue to increase and bear greater influence but just remember the truth.

Isaiah 40:22
"God sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers"

Though God was disturbed by the ambition of man, he was not surprised, and he was not powerless against it, it took all but a word from his mouth for their ambition to fall into pieces. The power and authorities of this world are nothing before God.

Our God is not one of many, he is the one and only God, the all powerful king, Lord of all. 2 Thessalonians speaks of that great evil power which shall arise, the Man of Lawlessness or the Anti-Christ, that one that shall wage war against the church. The epitome of evil manifested, what happens to him?

2 Thessalonians 2:8
“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.”

Just remember the words of that hymn, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow”

Prayer:

“Sovereign Lord, we thank you for our power and authority, over all things, in all places at all times. There is nothing that happens without your divine permission, and we know that all things permitted are for our good and your glory. Help us not to fear but to trust and to remember those divine truths and promises which shall bring us comfort in these dark days.”
