Devotional 1
God creates the heavens and the earth
Read Genesis 1:1-2
In verse 1, God creates the heavens and the earth, but in verse 2 we see they are still void and without form. The raw material is there but it has not yet been shaped. Then in verse 3, God begins to form creation, how does he do it? By his words. A woodworker must labour with his hands often for many hours to create his design. For God he simply needs to speak. In creation stories from other ancient religions such as the Babylonians, water is often depicted as an evil god, the nemesis of the creator god, the origin of creation becomes a cosmic battle between gods. But in Genesis, there is no fight, no resistance. This is the power of God’s word.
It is not that he has no enemies, but that he has no equal, all his enemies are under his rule and cannot resist his words. What he speaks will come to pass, from the first words he spoke right to the very last. From the beginning we are given a lesson in what we can trust and depend upon more than anything, God’s word.
In the Bible are contained the Words of God himself, they are not the flimsy, foolish words of men, but the unbreakable, living, active, words of God. Promises which will never fail, warnings which cannot be avoided, truths that will always be true. Jesus tells us in at the end of his sermon on the mount (Matthew 7:24-27), build your house upon the rock, the rock which will not be moved.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” These words are what you build your life upon, not the wisdom of your parents, not the wisdom of the world, but firmly upon the written word of God.
God created this whole world, this whole universe by the word of his mouth, the power of such words is beyond comprehension, why would you ever doubt them? When you read his word, treat it with the respect and authority that it deserves. For it is not the laws of physics or some unseen spiritual force that upholds all things, but the very words of God.
Prayer
“Father, your word is powerful, able to form mountains and bring down empires. Your word is what we need to build our lives upon. Help us to understand your truth, implant it upon our hearts and let your word to the powerful work in us which you have called it do”
