God Chooses to Redeem
Read Genesis 12:1-3
So God has reached this point again where sin has so corrupted the world that he must do something with it. But has already said he won’t destroy the world again with a flood. So what will he do?
Instead of only taking the righteous few and destroying all the wicked, he chooses another path, instead of destroying the wicked, he will rescue them and redeem them and he chooses to do it through this man, Abram.
In Noah all of the families of the earth were cursed, but now through Abram all the families of the earth shall be blessed. In these passages we are witnessing the beginning of one the most important biblical themes throughout all scripture, covenant, specifically here the Abrahamic covenant.
The realities and aspects of this covenant will be elaborated on more in the following chapters but for a most basic biblical definition a covenant is “promises from God guaranteed by an oath”, and the most important aspect of the Abrahamic Covenant that will be made explicit in Genesis 15 is that it is unconditional, as in the promises cannot be broken.
Why would God do this? Why does he keep making promises, showing us grace? Why doesn’t he just destroy it all? Because it is isn’t who he is. He is not the destructive God, the temperamental God. He is the wise, all-knowing redeemer God.
He binds himself to us through his promises, because he is gracious God who chooses to love those who are least deserving of love. We stand today in the New Covenant, that which will established by the body and blood of Jesus poured out on the cross.
A covenant that will never be broken, and a covenant that we do not deserve to be a part of. A covenant that has purchased for us forgiveness of our sins and eternal life with God. Realise that the very thing that stands between you and hell is nothing about who you are, what you have done, or what you will do, it is only because of the promises of God and be glad because those promises are a more solid, sure and certain comfort than anything you could possibly do.
Prayer:
“Lord, thank you that you are a covenant-keeping God, your faithfulness is as sure as the rising of the sun, I have no reason to doubt your promises. Help me to have faith in you, to believe even when my sight betrays me. I do not know why you would bind yourself to me? Why would you show such grace to me? But I am grateful. All praise and glory be to your name. In Jesus name, Amen.”
