Glimpse of the Future
Read Genesis 15:13-16
God shares with Abram a glimpse of the future, a foretelling of what would happen to his descendants. Of their slavery, exodus and return to the promised Land. How could God know all these things?
Isaiah 46:9–11 (ESV)
9 I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ 11 calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.
God knows all things and ordains all things. He knows what would happen to Abram’s descendants not just because he could see into the future but because had declared that it would be their future.
God is king, he is sovereign, and there is no limitation on that. None can thwart his plans, None can resist against what the Lord decrees. Some may grow frustrated and annoyed at this truth, at the kind of God we praise. But really it should be nothing but encouraging and comforting to us.
Who would you wish to be in control? Who do you want controlling your destiny, your family’s destiny, every circumstance of your day? Even its chance or fate someone is controlling what goes on around us. Who do you want in control? I know who I want. I want God.
A kind, wise, gracious Father, a Father I can know and trust. Not blind lady luck, fate, the universe, our ancestral spirits or anything like that. We should want God.
I can have comfort in spite of all circumstances because who I know who controls all circumstances and I know he loves me because he sent his son to die in order to save me. A child does not need to fear, when their father is calm and holding their hand despite the dangers that may surround them.
So we do not need to fear anything, when we remember in whose hands we are constantly held. Our heavenly father, who “prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
All things are powerless before God, sickness, enemies, spiritual powers, all of it must bow before God and submit to his wishes.
