Devotional 4

First thing God does in creation

Read Genesis 1:3-10

We see God filling his creation with so very many things, trees, plants, sea creatures, and land animals. But before all these things in the first days of creation we see him separating things. Light from darkness, water in the heavens from the water on the earth, the dry land from the sea.

The first thing God does is create boundaries, he sets the borders of how far the light, the darkness, the waters and the dry land may go. Paul even speaks of him setting the boundaries of our lives.

Acts 17:26 (ESV) And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.

Remember it is our God who sets the bounds of everything, nothing ever runs off unrestrained by God. If it appears that way it is only because God has permitted it to run wild but nothing is ever out of his control.

The sickness in our body may only go as far as he dictates, no object of harm may come our way unless he permits it, no spiritual affliction may come at us which does not first pass through his hands, no one we love can run past the boundaries God has set for them.

God is always Lord of creation, sin has not changed that, so we do not need to wonder whether we are being afflicted by something which has slipped past God’s watchful eye and now comes against us without his knowledge. Nothing in all creation is not known by God, therefore a forcefield sits around, borders which may not be passed by anything except that which our loving father permits, things which are for our good.

Floods can rise no higher, our enemies go no further, our loved ones run no further, our sicknesses afflict us no more, sin can tempt us no more than our loving Father determines. There is little greater comfort in hard times than this, that despite the greatest difficulties there is someone who loves you who is in control of it all. Many do not know this great blessing, but as we Christians we do. Praise be to God

Prayer

“Father, you are enthroned above all, there is nothing that escapes your eyes, nothing which you do not know. Just as you have set the boundaries upon the waters and waves, so you restrain the afflictions, temptations and suffering that come our way. That which comes to us is only that which is good for us, for it comes from you. Help us to find comfort in these truths, and help us to trust you and your good plans more. Amen.”
