Devotional 6
After God's perfect creation
Read Genesis 3:1
After God's perfect creation has been made, in enters an enemy seeking to destroy this perfection, to pervert, and ruin God’s good work. Here he is referred to as the serpent, we know from the book of Revelation, this serpent is Satan himself.
As it says in the opening verse of chapter 3. He was more crafty, more cunning than all the other beasts. He was a master of deception. Who does he approach? The women. Knowing full well that she had not been there when God declared not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That was told to her by her husband.
He injects just a bit of doubt into her thinking, “Did God really say?” He misleads her, you can see she is not wholly sure of God’s command, because she adds “you shall not touch it”, which was never part of the original command.
Knowing her doubt, and seeing her weakness he comes with the right hook, his lie to compete with God’s command. “You will not die; you will be like God”. Made her believe God was holding back something good from them.
This our introduction to our great adversary, the enemy who wages war against all God’s children. But the goal of his war is not to kill us, not initially anyway but rather is to lead us into sin and away from God.
How does it he do it? By showing us a supposedly better way, he comes along side us like God, whispering into our ear that thing which is best for us, the good way in which
we should walk. But is it truly for our good, no it is to feed his selfish ambition to manipulate and turn everything away from worshipping God.
Beware of this menace, he prowls around seeking for weaknesses, opportunities to bring you down. He never tires and he loves nothing more than see you fall into sin again and again. Do not deny the reality of his existence, he is very real and very dangerous, a murderer could kill you, Satan will drag you to eternal death with him.
But remember this, “Little children, you are from God and have overcome, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
Satan cannot conquer you and he never will. He is not all-powerful, as long as we stay near him who is all powerful, and has redeemed us from the power of and slavery to sin.
